Web 2.0 - what does this mean in reality?
The web is developing - and much of its recent hype is going into the so
called Web2. But what is really the difference?? Looking backwards, just 10 years back, many websites had some single pages, filled with lots of texts and with simple fonts like Arial or Times Roman. Minimalistic web design in its bad sense, using only few fonts and graphic items, was normal. Then this changed immediately. Flash appeared, millions of colours, heavy use of graphical items, fonts video and audio made the web to a true experimental place for designers.
The bad point: Annoying flash intros, unreadable crazy fonts, and confusing structures on many websites. But what is the alternative? Yes it is simple, it is simplicity. It is much more that a few fonts in your web design … its a restart from scratch, creating true value for the users. It is a way back to;the roots of the web, without loosing its achievements and making use of the new technologies. Simple designs, not too many fonts, a high value of content: That is Web 2.0.
One example for demonstration: A simple design changes a simple font site into an interesting experience. Instead of showing 10.000 fonts, only some 50 fonts of high quality are shown.
Another example: Concentration on some few colours can make a normal free web directory outstanding from the many others. Whether web directory or font site - often less creativity is better than too much fuss. Concentrate on usability instead of too many graphics.
For those with some interest in art: The same development happened around a hundred years ago, when Western people discovered the art of Africa. After having seen a lot of romantic art, the minimalistic design of
African Masks fascinated Europeans. So Web2 is somehow just a way back to humanity - enjoy it!
